Misen Modular Knife Storage

Modular Knife Storage designed for Misen. We created a magnetic knife holder that is modular and scalable. Focusing on a protective design that could fit in any drawer, the module holds most knife shapes and pairs magnetically with a smaller steak knife module. The lateral nature of the connection allows it connect infinitely, allowing the user to accommodate any amount of knives as well as any drawer width.

The sharp and geometric form-factor is meant to communicate sharpness and an architectural lens. The design uses a repeating edge that connects the built environment to the knife, protecting the blade as well as the user. The shape is rigid and angular (the opposite of most kitchen knives) offering an interesting visual balance between the smooth cutting tool and the faceted knife holder.

The design has strategically placed magnets on the inside of the groove to firmly suspend any knife in place. We looked at a variety of different knife archetypes of all shapes and sizes, making sure the geometry would house a majority of household kitchen knives.

There are several magnets located on the interior of the holder to suspend any knife in place and the design features micro suction pads on the underside to keep the knife holders from sliding in a drawer.

Misen is a manufacturer of premium kitchen tools with a focus on good design. They're a long-time collaborator of ours and we worked on numerous versions, with countless forms and features. This bold concept, paired with their iconic kitchen knives, was an opportunity to develop something function driven with a sculptural touch.
